We raise pastured pork, grass-fed beef, pesticide-free produce and famed colorful eggs on our small, sustainable farm. Our livestock is raised without added hormones or antibiotics. Each member of the family works on the farm and contributes to what is genuinely a family-run operation. Tour times: 1pm – 6pm – Come out and visit our farm and we will explain how we have been sustainably farming this same piece of land in my family for 150 years.  We have been designated as a NC Century Farm.  Expect to see pastured cattle grazing, pastured pigs lying around and our horses hanging out. We’ll explain how our cow/calf and farrow to finish operations work.  Enjoy free samples of our beef and pork products as you stand under one of our Big Oak trees and enjoy the view of our farm. Cackleberry is a farmstead cheesemaker. We make a variety of hard and soft cheeses. Swedish Red cows are grazed on pesticide free pastures. The cows are not treated with antibiotics or hormones. The whey from cheesemaking is fed to pigs. Eggs are produced from Rhode Island Red hens.  Products: Variety of aged hard cheeses and fresh soft cheeses, beef, whey fed pork (limited), pastured eggs

Commonwealth Farms

Cabarrus County and the NC Cooperative Extension – Cabarrus Center partnered to develop the Elma C. Lomax Incubator Farm. The farm works like a business incubator. Individuals can enroll in the program which provides classroom instruction on the business of farming in Cabarrus County as well as hands–on experience on the farm. Participants in the program develop and manage their own agriculture business while receiving guidance from staff and seasoned farmers.

The farm consists of 30.6 acres donated by Mrs. Elma C. Lomax.  It is owned and operated by Cabarrus County with education and programing provided by NC Cooperative Extension – Cabarrus Center.  It is a Certified Organic Operation.

In operation for 9 years, we are a small alpaca farm with 13 alpacas and one black sheep (our “greeter diva”) and one white lamb, Darby. Also meet Bun Bun, our lop eared Binny! Our animals are very tame and love children. Play a game, pet the animals, or relax with a picnic (food sold at the farm) in our lovely shaded acre in front. Watch alpaca yarn being spun in the fiber studio. Products: alpaca fleece toys, yarn, shawls, scarves, felted jewelry, shiitake mushrooms, organic yogurt & kombucha

Mills Family Farm is a working cattle operation run by the Mills family since 1935.  We average 200 head of Angus cattle on the farm and operate an All- Natural, Pasture Raised, No Added Hormones, no Antibiotics local beef program.  We have a farm store where we sell our beef, and products from other NC farms with the same practices as us.  Everything Local! Everything All Natural!  Products: All-natural, dry aged beef and veal. Nitrate and Nitrite free local pork. Honey, jams and jellies, eggs, butter,  yogurt, produce, CSA.

Activities: Hay rides and pony rides (weather dependent), story board presentation, and informal discussion with veterinarian/owner Dr. Bradley Mills regarding our working cattle operation and family farm history.

We currently have one wine for sale, the 2012 Chambourcin, a dry red wine. We were started 5 years ago by Elizabeth Anne Dover in an attempt to more wisely use her grandmothers’ farms.
